Barnsley Interchange

Cllr Sam Burdett, Cabinet spokesperson for Communities, said: “The violence and disorder that took place at Barnsley Interchange on Saturday evening was completely unacceptable. Let me be absolutely clear: there is no place in Barnsley for this kind of behaviour. Nobody should have to feel unsafe in our town centre, on public transport or in our public spaces because of the actions of a small number of individuals. Those responsible for violence, intimidation and anti-social behaviour should expect to be identified and face the full consequences of their actions.

“South Yorkshire Police are currently investigating the incident, and we will support their enquiries and any enforcement action that follows.

“This incident is deeply concerning, particularly as we had already been taking action to address reports of anti-social behaviour in and around the interchange. In partnership with South Yorkshire Police, we had increased the presence of town centre wardens, introduced joint patrols with the police and enhanced wider activity aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour, engaging with young people and providing reassurance to residents, businesses and visitors.

“Following this weekend's events, we will work with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, which manages the interchange, and South Yorkshire Police to review the incident and determine whether further measures are needed to prevent similar incidents.

“Barnsley is a welcoming, proud and resilient borough, and we are determined to keep it that way. We will continue to take robust action against those who harm our communities and undermine confidence in our town centre.”
