Active in Barnsley Partnership 

To drive forward and improve our physical activity levels across the borough it's highly recognised that we can do it better, together. Uniting partners from around our place to strengthen our approach and collectively make Barnsley a place of possibilities. Collectively meeting on a formal and informal basis to break down barriers, overcome obstacles and share our expertise with each other. We have a variety of delivery partners across the borough that support with the development and implementation of our co-produced Active in Barnsley strategy to increase physical activity levels throughout our area.

Barnsley Council

Barnsley Council a Metropolitan Local Authority in South Yorkshire serving a population of 244,000 residents. Delivering a diverse range of public services across Growth and Sustainability, Children's Services, Public Health, Adult Social Care and Communities.

The borough is bisected by the M1 motorway; it's rural to the west, and largely urban/industrial to the east. 68% of Barnsley's 32,863 hectares is green belt and 9% is National Park.

Barnsley has a lot to offer - one of the highest private sector jobs growth in the UK, affordable property, great links to the outdoors and cities alike, and a transforming town centre.

Barnsley College

Barnsley College is a large tertiary college serving Barnsley and the surrounding areas. The college has three brands - Barnsley College, Barnsley Sixth Form College and Barnsley College Higher Education. Offering vocational courses, A Levels, Apprenticeships, T Levels, Higher Education and part-time courses, the college has more than 9,000 students and over 700 staff. Barnsley College was recognised as Outstanding by Ofsted in its inspection in March 2022.

Barnsley CVS

Barnsley CVS stands for Barnsley Community and Voluntary Services. 

They aim to create, support and develop a sustainable and vibrant third sector. They support volunteers, local charities, voluntary and community groups and social enterprise organisations across the Barnsley borough.

As the infrastructure organisation in Barnsley for the voluntary and community sector, they provide high-quality services to give the sector stability, support and status to help it prosper. 

Barnsley FC Community Trust 

Barnsley FC Community Trust is a registered charity delivering community and charitable activities on behalf of Barnsley Football Club.

Our Mission

Barnsley FC Community Trust provide inspiring, high-quality inclusive programmes and initiatives. Harnessing the reach of Barnsley Football Club, we raise the aspirations of our community, supporting them through positive change.

Barnsley Premier Leisure

Barnsley Premier Leisure is at the heart of local communities, they're a charitable trust with one mission: to make everyone feel good. They reinvest all profits into bettering facilities and customer experiences – so that every visit is local, fun and friendly; plus innovative too! That's what guides them in everything from how they work together to how you experience it - for the 'good of all'.

Grassroots Sports Academy

Grassroots Sports Academy are a sports provision company that teaches sports through schools across Barnsley. They actively promote physical activity and active lifestyles across the community in multiple different areas across Yorkshire. They provide support for functional fitness to improving the quality of life, have school partnerships and have many community led projects and programmes. They support mental health within the communities in a variety of different ways including being active in the work place to help promote a more positive physical and mental wellbeing lifestyle.

Sheffield FA

Sheffield FA Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association is a non-profit organisation who are responsible for the development, administration and governance of all affiliated football within a 20-mile radius of Sheffield Cathedral.

Our region has historically made a huge contribution to the development of football. They're the oldest County FA, the area is home to the oldest ground in the world and the oldest football club.

This unique heritage is important, but they also acknowledge their region’s role in developing the game and delivering success during more recent times – The first Parklife Hub City, the largest junior league in Europe, and of course, several elite performers from our region have represented England at men’s and women’s international level during recent tournaments.

They work in partnership with the FA to deliver the national game strategy across our county to ensure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful game.

Yorkshire Sport

Yorkshire Sport Foundation is a National Lottery funded charity working across the nine districts of South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire, and part of a network of England-wide Active Partnerships.

They believe in the power of movement, physical activity and sport to change people’s lives, bring us together and tackle inequalities.  They want as many people as possible to enjoy all the benefits being active can bring.
