Athersley man fined for dumping waste less than a mile from his own home
An Athersley man has been fined after being found guilty of fly-tipping less than a mile away from his own home.
In February 2025, we received a report of a large amount of waste that had been fly-tipped on Clifton Close, Athersley. Enquiries identified Mr Shane Chandler, 47, of Wingfield Road as being the person responsible.
After failing to appear at court, Mr Chandler was arrested and was presented to court after spending a morning in custody, where he pleaded guilty to the offence.
He was sentenced to a conditional discharge for 12 months and fined £226.
This means that should Mr Chandler commit and be convicted of an offence in the next year, he will be sentenced both for this offence and any new offence for which he is convicted.
Councillor Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said:
“This latest prosecution shows that we continue to take strong action against fly-tippers who blight our borough with their actions.
“We will not tolerate fly-tipping in Barnsley and with the help of our communities we will identify, prosecute and fine offenders.
“Our wardens, Safer Communities team and litigation team work tirelessly to make these prosecutions happen, and I would like to thank them for all of their hard work.”
