Barnsley care leavers given a digital boost for their future
Following a session with our young people and as part of our corporate parenting commitments, we are donating 100 laptops and 30 mobile phones to care leavers aged up to 25 in Barnsley.
Laptops which are no longer being used in our offices have been securely wiped and renewed by our Technology and Innovation team to empower young people with tools they need for education, employment and staying connected.
In addition, 30 mobile phones that have also been decommissioned from council’s use are being gifted to help care leavers remain connected and supported as they take their next steps.
Councillor Ashley Peace, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: " This initiative is a clear demonstration of corporate parenting in action, listening to our young people, responding to their needs, and delivering real solutions that empower them for the future.
“It reflects our commitment to giving care leavers the strongest possible foundation for adult life, ensuring they feel safe and empowered to reach their ambitions, and I’m sure this will make a real difference to their lives.”
We are committed to putting our young residents at the heart of everything we do and as part of our Great Childhoods Ambition programme, we want all children and young people in our borough to have the best start in life.
Our role as a corporate parent means we will always listen, respond, and deliver on the needs of children in care and care leavers. By working together across services, with partners, and communities, we can ensure young people have the opportunities, tools, and confidence to thrive.
