Barnsley Council ranked among the top ten most productive councils in England

Barnsley Council has been named one of the top ten most productive councils in the country, highlighting our strong and sustainable performance across a number of service areas.

Barnsley Council came seventh in the country, which shows how hard we’ve worked over many years to manage money well, help people early, and make good decisions for local residents.

This year’s Index gives greater weight to actual spend than to budgeted spend, reinforcing Barnsley’s record of careful budgeting and value for money.

The announcement is part of the latest IMPOWER Index, published by The MJ. The Index looks at how well councils use every pound they spend. It compares different council areas fairly by looking at things like local needs and challenges.

Cllr Sir Steve Houghton CBE, Leader of Barnsley Council, said: “I’m incredibly proud that Barnsley Council has been recognised as one of the top ten most productive councils in England, the only top ten authority in South Yorkshire.

“This highlights Barnsley’s long-standing record of doing things well and sits alongside other successes such as our double win as LGC and The MJ Council of the Year in 2023.  It reflects many years of hard work, strong planning, and a commitment to getting the best outcomes for local people.

“This is great recognition for our staff. Their dedication and new ideas make a big difference to people in Barnsley every day.

“We’ll continue to look at the data to help plan future services. While there is always more to do, this recognition shows our strong progress and the solid foundations we’ve built for Barnsley’s future.”
