Barnsley Council’s Love Where You Live delivers safer, more welcoming green spaces across Penistone area communities

A wave of improvements can now be seen to muchloved parks and green spaces across Penistone area communities thanks to Barnsley Council’s Love Where You Live programme.

This forms part of a £2.1 million investment to enhance parks across all 21 wards of the borough, helping create cleaner, greener and more welcoming places for everyone.

Several parks across the Penistone West and Penistone East wards have already benefitted from upgrades shaped by residents’ and local councillors’ priorities, with more improvements to come.

They include Silkstone Common Rec (Mike’s Place) play area, Manor Park in Silkstone, The Nook in Hoylandswaine, Penistone Recreation Ground, Green Acre and Church View Road in Penistone.

These improvements include refurbished play areas, refreshed equipment, new surfacing, repainting, updated seating, upgraded access routes, and new features such as basket swings and toddler play units. Together, these changes have helped create brighter, safer, and more enjoyable spaces for families to explore.

Nature spaces have also received attention. At Potterholes Plantation, near Tankersley, new noticeboards now help visitors connect with the woodland and learn more about this valued green space.

Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said: “Our Love Where You Live programme is transforming local spaces into cleaner, greener and safer places for everyone to enjoy.”

“These works are sure to bring joy to families and other park users as we continue to invest in well-loved community spaces.”

Some of the works that are still to be done include Springvale Play Area, in Penistone which will have upgrades to its play equipment and multi-use games area.  These upcoming developments will build on the momentum already felt across the area.

Together, these projects form part of Barnsley Council’s wider ambition to support vibrant, connected neighbourhoods where everyone can feel proud of where they live.
