Barnsley Council’s Love Where You Live supports improvements to Wombwell car park

A popular car park in Wombwell will undergo improvement works through Barnsley Council’s Love Where You Live programme.

Line markings in Summer Lane car park will be refreshed as part of widespread Love Where You Live investment in every Barnsley ward.

Our Barnsley Council South Area Team is working with our Highways service on this project, in consultation with Wombwell ward councillors.

The works, planned for spring 2026, have been designed to make the car park safer and easier for everyone to use.

By renewing the lines, the layout will become clearer to drivers and pedestrians, helping to reduce the risk of accidents.

These improvements form one small part of a much bigger investment across Barnsley’s towns and villages.

Through the Love Where You Live initiative, the council is bringing forward community enhancement projects in every ward.

A total of £3.5 million is being invested in local places, supporting everything from environmental improvements to grassroots ideas shaped by residents themselves.

Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: “These improvements are all about making everyday journeys that little bit safer and easier for people.

“We know how much Summer Lane car park in Wombwell is used, so refreshing the layout is an important step in looking after a space that many rely on.

“It’s another example of how, through Love Where You Live, we’re continuing to care for the places people use most and building stronger, more connected communities.

Everyone is encouraged to get involved in Love Where You Live. Whether by joining a local project, helping to look after shared spaces, or putting forward new ideas, every contribution helps strengthen Barnsley’s communities.

Together, local people and the council are creating places they are proud to call home.
