Barnsley Libraries looking for artists and writers to help celebrate the National Year of Reading

Writers, poets and artists with a connection to Barnsley or the surrounding area are invited to submit their idea for a series of creative projects designed to bring stories, creativity and communities together.

Our Barnsley Libraries team have launched an exciting call-out for local artists to take part in projects marking the National Year of Reading. The programme will see projects developed and showcased across Barnsley libraries, with a focus on community collaboration, local voices and celebrating the joy of reading.

These projects will be the latest in a growing programme of artist-led work supported by Barnsley Libraries through its National Portfolio Organisation programme. The team support a wide range of artists through funded projects in local libraries, which have helped artists to develop new skills, gain confidence and create impactful, people-focused work rooted in local communities.

The team are currently looking for:

  • Writer or Poet in Residence - exploring storytelling, reading and writing across Barnsley
  • Creative Micro Commission at Cudworth Library - a small-scale, community-focused creative project
  • Green Libraries Commission - a project inspired by environmental themes, culminating in a public celebration during Green Libraries Week in early November

Artists are invited to propose a creative project, exhibition, series of workshops or other idea that engages with the community while celebrating the National Year of Reading. Successful applicants will work closely with our team and local communities to shape their idea and deliver engaging creative experiences.

Applications are open to artists at all stages of their career, from those seeking their first professional opportunity to established artists looking to develop new work.

As well as delivering creative projects, selected artists will benefit from ongoing support from the Barnsley Libraries team, including help with logistics, promotion, and community connections.

Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said:

“Barnsley Libraries are at the heart of our communities, and this programme is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate creativity, storytelling and the joy of reading.
"These commissions will not only support talented local artists, but also create meaningful experiences for residents across the borough. We’re proud to offer opportunities like this that bring people together, highlight local voices, and showcase the incredible creativity we have here in Barnsley.”

How to apply

Artists are asked to submit a proposal outlining their idea, how they would engage with communities, and how their project celebrates the National Year of Reading.
