Barnsley Libraries to unveil magical new installation – ‘Voyage of the Story Shell’
Barnsley Libraries’ Story Shell is set to shine brighter than ever this winter, with a brand-new illuminated installation to be revealed during Bright Nights on 21 and 22 November.
‘Voyage of the Story Shell’ is an ambitious multi-artform project from Barnsley Libraries, created by The Colour Foundry – the creative collaboration formed by artists Fabric Lenny, Urban Projections and Nicholas Lewis. The installation transforms one of Barnsley’s most loved family art spaces into an immersive journey of light, music, animation and projected illustration.
Families are invited to discover the tall tale of how the Story Shell arrived in Barnsley, many miles from the sea. The exterior of the six-metre inflatable sculpture will become a glowing storybook – with shifting colours, hand-drawn animations and original narrative songs. Inside, visitors can listen to the origin story as the Shell comes to life around them.
The team are working with pupils from St Mary’s C of E Primary School to create the details that appear in the final installation. Their ideas directly shape the story, the projected imagery and even the accompanying songs.
Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities and Public Health, said: “The Story Shell has always been a place shaped by imagination. Voyage of the Story Shell continues that work – giving people in our communities the opportunity to help create original artwork with professional artists and see it presented on a public stage.”
Fabric Lenny, one of the artists involved in the project as part of The Colour Foundry, said: “The Colour Foundry are really excited to be returning to Bright Nights with a vibrant new work that celebrates the wonder of storytelling and friendship, featuring the voices and artwork of local children”.
Created by international artists Suzie Devey and Steve Messam, the Story Shell began life as a unique pop-up library and creative space. Since 2024 it has hosted live storytelling, school sessions, creative workshops and performances.
‘Voyage of the Story Shell’ marks a new chapter – celebrating what the Shell has become while opening it up to new audiences through digital art, sound and light.
The installation will be open to the public at The Civic during Barnsley Bright Nights. Bright Nights is taking place on 21 and 22 November, 5pm to 8.30pm – more information can be found at visitbarnsley.co.uk/brightnights.
Barnsley Bright Nights is a free event that’s accessible to everyone. It’s presented by Barnsley Arts & Events and funded by Arts Council England, Barnsley Council, The Glass Works, UK Government, Visit Barnsley, Alhambra Shopping Centre, Barnsley College, Barnsley Libraries and brsk.
