Barnsley Markets welcomes new family Play Hub as part of Family Hubs transformation programme
Barnsley Market was filled with laughter and excitement yesterday as families came together to celebrate the official opening of the Play Hub, a vibrant new space designed to promote play, learning, and connection for young children and their families.
The initiative is part of the Family Hubs transformation programme, delivered in partnership with Barnsley Markets.
The ribbon was officially cut by the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor David Leech, who joined families and community members in marking the occasion. The event was a joyful and lively occasion, with families getting stuck into activities such as drawing, playing with a range of toys, and enjoying the sensory space.
Adding to the fun, families were invited to take part in a rubber duck hunt around the market – a playful challenge that even the Mayor and Mayoress got involved in. The challenge continues over the summer, so there’s still time for families to join in.
A special appearance from Toby Tyke, the beloved mascot of Barnsley FC, brought smiles and excitement to children and parents alike.
Now open to the public, the Play Hub offers a free, drop-in space where families can relax, play and spend quality time together. The space also features a bespoke mural by local artist Adam Briscoe, encouraging children to spot familiar Barnsley landmarks, words, and shapes.
Families can also get further support from Family Hubs, including information about groups, workshops, early language support, and activity idea app ‘easypeasy’.
Councillor Trevor Cave, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “The opening of the Play Hub at Barnsley Market is a fantastic step forward in making support for families more visible and accessible in the heart of our community.
“It’s more than just a place to play - it’s a welcoming space where families can connect, feel supported, and access the help they need.
“We remain committed to making great childhoods possible in Barnsley, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact the Play Hub will have for children and families across the borough.”
The Play Hub is now open to the public during the Glass Works usual opening hours. More information will soon be added to the Family Hubs page on our website.
