Barnsley’s employers pledge their commitment to Pathways to Work
This week, Barnsley’s employers came together with one shared mission: to unlock potential, grow local talent and help more people move into meaningful work.
Barnsley continues to lead the way nationally in tackling economic inactivity through its bold, Barnsley‑born Pathways to Work model — an approach now shaping national policy. Seven in ten people who are economically inactive want to work but face barriers such as poor health, low confidence, or limited skills. Pathways to Work brings health, wellbeing, skills and employment support together, helping people move forward in a way that works for them.
At this landmark event, local businesses united behind a commitment to recruit, develop and retain Barnsley’s homegrown talent.
An interactive marketplace showcased the high‑impact support available to employers. From fully funded wages for small businesses hiring a young person, expert business advice from Enterprising Barnsley, to free workplace health and wellbeing support designed to keep people well at work.
Employers were invited to become official Pathways to Work partners, pledging to open more doors for local people by:
- Sharing vacancies to match people to opportunities
- Creating or prioritising roles for people facing barriers
- Offering work experience and early‑career pathways
- Supporting careers education across Barnsley
- Helping their staff stay healthy, supported and well at work
The atmosphere was one of ambition and shared purpose, with businesses and partners united in their belief that together, Barnsley can drive meaningful change for local people.
Barnsley has always led from the front, and Pathways to Work shows what’s possible when a place acts with determination, vision and a genuine belief in its people.
"Our brilliant local businesses deserve real thanks for the role they are playing. Their commitment, energy and willingness to open doors is what turns a good idea into real change. This isn’t just about creating job opportunities, it’s about helping local people move into healthier, happier and more productive lives.
"As a council, we want to lead by example. That’s why we guarantee an interview for Pathways to Work participants who meet the essential criteria for our roles — ensuring local talent is recognised, supported and never overlooked.
"Together, we are showing what Barnsley can achieve when employers and partners stand united behind a shared mission to help people thrive.
