Barnsley set to boost EV charging through funding proposal of up to £1.7 million
On Wednesday 18 February, Cabinet will consider a proposal to accelerate our borough‑wide electric vehicle (EV) charging programme.
The proposal seeks approval of up to £1.7 million in Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) capital funding, along with £125,000 in capability funding from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).
The funding will enable us to work with leading charge point operators to significantly expand public EV charging provision, especially for residents who do not have access to off‑street parking.
By working with the EV industry, we can make sure we are meeting demand by providing enough chargers where EV drivers need them, now and in the future. This programme is a key step in Barnsley’s wider commitment to reducing transport emissions and supporting a shift to cleaner, greener travel.
Under the proposed approach, EV charge point providers will install, own and operate new chargers across Barnsley, contributing towards installation costs and helping to maximise the number of charging points delivered.
The work supports Barnsley’s ambitions to rapidly reduce carbon emissions by 2045, improve local air quality, and ensure communities across the borough benefit from access to modern charging facilities.
Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to accelerate Barnsley’s transition to cleaner transport.
"By securing this funding, we can make EV charging more accessible for residents who don’t have off‑street parking, support local businesses to decarbonise their fleets, and help improve air quality across the borough.
"The LEVI programme is a vital step in our journey towards a greener, healthier Barnsley, and I’m delighted to see us moving forward at pace."
If approved, further consultation with local residents, stakeholders and ward members will take place as site locations are proposed and refined.
