Barnsley to Discuss Advances Flagship Health and Wellbeing Hub at the Heart of the Town Centre
Barnsley’s innovative Health on the High Street project moves forward in a major boost for community wellbeing and town centre regeneration.
Barnsley Council’s cabinet will be discussing the next phase of the pioneering Health on the High Street project, following their approval to progress to the next stage of design and development, known as RIBA 4.
The discussion will provide an update on the project’s progress as it reaches the end of the Spatial Coordination stage and moves into the Technical Design stage, where layouts and plans are finalised into fully detailed, build-ready plans.
This ambitious scheme will see the creation of a state-of-the-art health and wellbeing hub at the heart of Barnsley’s town centre, bringing vital health, leisure, and community services together under one roof.
The first phase created an NHS Community Diagnostic Centre located in The Glass Works. The next phase will turn the first floor of the Alhambra Shopping Centre into a lively place for health, wellbeing, and learning, while keeping the Alhambra’s strong retail and leisure offer.
The project is a key part of the council’s Barnsley 2030 strategy and Inclusive Economic Growth Strategy, supporting healthier, happier lives and a thriving local economy.
Councillor Robin Franklin, Cabinet spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “Barnsley Council is working with partners to invest in local people by driving forward Health on the High Street project for Barnsley.
“By bringing health, wellbeing, and community services right into the heart of Barnsley town centre, we’re making it easier for everyone to access the support they need, when they need it.
“This investment is about more than bricks and mortar, it’s about building a healthier, fairer, and more vibrant Barnsley for everyone. I’m proud to see us taking this next step and look forward to the positive impact it will have for our residents, their health and our local economy.”
