Barnsley young women unite to celebrate International Women’s Day

Nearly 100 young women from secondary schools across Barnsley came together on Friday 6 March for an inspiring full‑day celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD).

The event, held at Base 71, was organised by the Barnsley Council’s BYouth Young People’s Service in partnership with the Great Childhoods Ambition team and other local partners, bringing future leaders together for a powerful day of motivation, learning, and empowerment.

The programme was opened by Cllr Deborah Pearson, Cabinet Support Member for Children’s Services, and featured an energising keynote from Joada Allen, Managing Director of Visualised It, whose career in digital innovation set the tone for the day.

Joada captivated the audience with her personal journey and led sessions focused on digital careers and staying safe online, offering practical insights into navigating an increasingly digital world.

Throughout the day, young participants explored a variety of workshops themed around physical activity, resilience, and careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Each session aimed to build confidence, broaden horizons, and highlight the many pathways available to girls and young women in Barnsley.

Cllr Pearson said: “It was an honour to be invited to attend and speak at this fantastic event.
“This year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Give To Gain’, encourages generosity and collaboration in supporting women’s advancement. IWD is not just about women, it's also about the girls who will lead us next."
“When people, organisations, and communities give generously, through knowledge, resources, advocacy, mentoring, or time, opportunities for women increase.
“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed to making this day such a success. When women thrive, we all rise.”

The event served as a vibrant reminder of the strength, ambition, and potential of Barnsley’s young women, celebrating their achievements today while empowering them for the future.
