Beat the Street is back in Barnsley

Beat the Street is back in Barnsley this summer as part of our ongoing work to get people in our borough more physically active. This year’s game returns on Wednesday, 11 June to Friday, 23 July.

As with previous games, special sensors called Beat Boxes will be placed on lampposts around the borough. Participating primary schools will receive cards and maps, plus the wider community can pick up their free card from a distribution point listed on the Beat the Street website. Distribution points include local libraries and museums, as well as the Glassworks reception.

Alternatively, players over the age of 13 can use the free Beat the Street app. Once the game is underway, participants score points by walking, cycling, scooting and running between these sensors to score points for their school or workplace teams.

Participants should find the nearest Beat Box on the map; tap it and then find another within an hour to score points. Many players said that Beat the Street had helped encourage them to walk or scoot more often, visit new places and spend more time with their friends and family.

Beat the Street is co-ordinated by the sport and Physical Activity Team at Barnsley Council as part of our ongoing work to encourage children and adults in our borough to move more. In previous years, Beat the Street has encouraged more than 22,000 people to get more active and improve their physical activity levels.

Beat the Street Barnsley is being delivered in partnership with Intelligent Health, commissioned by Barnsley Council and funded by the Great Childhood Ambition, South Yorkshire Combined Mayoral Authority and The National Lottery through Sport England.

Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways said: “We are thrilled that the game is taking place for the third time in Barnsley and have seen first-hand the impact of the previous games on increased levels of physical activity and community cohesion.

“As seasoned Beat the Street players, we’d love to see how far Barnsley can go this time.

“I’d encourage everyone to sign up and get their friends, family, neighbours and colleagues involved.”
