Better Health Walks: New Walking Initiative Launching 2026
Our Sport and Physical Activity Team, in partnership with Barnsley Premier Leisure, is launching an exciting new free programme designed to help people improve their physical and mental health through the simple power of walking.
Better Health Walks is for adults living with a disability, long‑term health condition, or anyone feeling isolated or low who want support to become more active. The programme is referral-based, meaning you can either be referred by a health professional or choose to self-refer.
To self-refer, complete the online form, email info@letsgetgoing.co.uk or call 01226 730060. Once signed up, each person will have an initial health screening to ensure the walks are tailored to their needs and fitness level.
Better Health Walks is due to launch in February 2026. The walks will run weekly on weekdays, led by qualified walk leaders along some of Barnsley’s most scenic routes, offering the chance to enjoy beautiful views and nature. Alongside the walks, you can enjoy refreshments before and after, optional health check-ups, and access to trained health specialists, all free of charge.
If you feel isolated, lack confidence, or need motivation to get outdoors, this programme is for you. It’s also ideal for anyone looking to boost their mood and improve overall wellbeing.
This initiative is a great way to enjoy fresh air, meet new people, get back into physical activity and experience how small steps can have big benefits.
Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways said:
“I’m delighted to see the launch of our Better Health Walks initiative this February. Walking is one of the simplest ways to look after both our bodies and minds, and this programme offers a fantastic opportunity for adults living with a disability or long‑term health condition to come together, enjoy our borough’s beautiful scenery, and make positive, lasting changes to their wellbeing. I encourage all those eligible to get involved and experience the many benefits that walking in good company can bring.”
