Boxing European Champion Callum Simpson honoured at Barnsley Town Hall

Barnsley’s own European boxing champion Callum Simpson has been congratulated by the Mayor of Barnsley and Leader of the Council in a Civic Reception at Barnsley Town Hall.  

The Barnsley-born champion started his boxing career at Barnsley Star Amateur Boxing Club on Doncaster Road. He was invited to a celebration at the Town Hall by the Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Dave Leech following his European Super Middleweight title win in a dramatic fight in front of a hugely supportive home crowd at Oakwell earlier this month.  

Young boxers from the Star Gym and Body Carnegie Gym based in Bolton on Dearne attended the celebration and had the chance to ask Callum questions and have their picture taken with their hero at the event.  

The young boxers and their trainers were among more than 120 people including Callum’s friends, family and local councillors who came to celebrate and congratulate Callum.  

Mayor of Barnsley Cllr Dave Leech said: “Callum’s determination, courage, and exceptional talent have inspired us all over the past few years. He’s made history for our entire town and we’re incredibly proud of him, not just for bringing home this prestigious European title, but for the way he has carried the spirit of Barnsley with him at every step.  

“Callum’s decision to fight for this honour here on his home soil at Oakwell speaks volumes about his love and passion for our town. Callum is a wonderful ambassador for Barnsley.” 

Leader of Barnsley Council, Cllr Sir Steve Houghton, said: “I would especially like to thank Callum for the inspiration he’s giving to our young people in particular.  

“In Barnsley Council one of our main priorities is our Great Childhood’s Ambition, which is all about making sure every child feels they belong and are encouraged to dream big, explore their passions and believe anything is possible in Barnsley.  

“Callum Simpson is living proof of that belief. He’s made it possible in Barnsley, and now he’s helping others believe they can too.  

“Born and raised in our borough, Callum’s journey from local lad to European boxing champion shows what can happen when ambition meets opportunity.  

“We’re very proud of Callum’s achievements as he’s very proud of Barnsley.”
