Cabinet to discuss plans to update Barnsley’s vehicle fleet

On 1 April, Cabinet members will discuss proposals for a Vehicle Replacement Programme designed to modernise Barnsley Council’s fleet of vehicles, improve service resilience, and deliver long‑term financial and environmental benefits. These vehicles are used every day to deliver important services like waste and recycling collections, maintaining roads, looking after our green spaces, and supporting neighbourhood teams.

The proposal sets out plans to replace 228 older vehicles and introduce eight additional vehicles to strengthen the fleet and ensure frontline teams have the right equipment to deliver services reliably.

Replacing ageing vehicles now helps make sure services can run smoothly and safely.

Replacing older vehicles with newer, cleaner, and more efficient models will help cut emissions and improve air quality in Barnsley. It will also put the council in a strong position to adopt greener technology as it becomes available, supporting our long‑term ambition for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly fleet.

Many of our vehicles take a long time to order and build, especially specialist ones like refuse wagons. By planning ahead now, the council can avoid delays linked to national supply chain pressures, ensuring services can continue to perform at their best.

Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“We know how important our frontline services are to people across Barnsley, from bin collections to looking after our roads and our green spaces. Making sure our teams have reliable, modern vehicles is a really simple but vital part of delivering those services well.
“This programme is a sensible, long‑term investment that helps us keep costs down, cut emissions, and reduce the risk of service disruption. By planning ahead now, we’re making sure Barnsley is prepared for the future, with a cleaner, greener and more efficient fleet that supports the day‑to‑day services our residents rely on.”
