Car parking development in the town centre advances as new parking signs are installed on Barnsley’s roads
Following last year’s new pay and display machines and simplified parking prices, we’ve now installed digital signs to help you find a parking space more easily.
The new Variable Messaging Signs (VMS) show real-time space availability in our four main car parks: The Seam, The Glass Works, Market Gate and the Alhambra. The signs will display a live count of the spaces available or an open or full message to advise you on where to park.
These signs are designed to make parking easier, reduce congestion and help improve air quality. If the main car parks are full, you can also use on-street parking or other nearby car parks like Mark Street, Grahams Orchard, Joseph Street, Churchfields, Burleigh Street, Sackville Street or Pitt Street. The Lower Seam car park will also be reopening soon, adding 292 more spaces and helping to support broader regeneration efforts in the town centre.
We’ve also added 48 new pay machines so you can pay by cash or card at all town centre car parks.
Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“Our vision is to make parking in our town centre more affordable and accessible for our residents, visitors and workers.
“The Seam, Market Gate, The Glass Works and the Alhambra are the four main car parks in the town centre. By displaying the availability of spaces at these locations, we hope to save you time and make your journeys smoother, whether you’re using one of these car parks or choosing one of the alternatives nearby.
“This is another positive step for our community, building on last year’s improvements such as the new pay machines and our straightforward pricing model. We’re committed to making parking as simple and convenient as possible for everyone who lives and works in Barnsley.”
