Cartons to be recycled in Brown Bin from Monday 1 September
Barnsley residents will be able to recycle their liquid cartons in their brown bins from Monday 1 September.
Cartons are often referred to as Tetra Paks, are made from a combination of materials including paperboard, plastic, and sometimes aluminium.
This includes:
- Juice cartons (both large and small)
- UHT milk cartons
- Milk alternative cartons (such as oat, almond, and soy milk)
- Passata and cooking sauce cartons
- Jubbly ice lolly cartons
We’re committed to making recycling simpler and more accessible for everyone. Currently, around 45% of household waste is recycled in Barnsley, and the brown bin plays a key role in collecting dry mixed recyclables.
By expanding the list of accepted items, we aim to boost recycling rates, reduce landfill, and support Barnsley’s ambition to be a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable borough.
These items can be placed in the Brown bin alongside plastic pots, tubs, trays, glass, tins and cans.
Cartons must also be rinsed out before they are recycled.
Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“The inclusion of liquid cartons into the brown bin will make it easier for residents to recycle more of their everyday items at home.
“We hope that including food and drink cartons in our mixed recycling will boost our recycling rate and help Barnsley be cleaner and greener.”
