Celebrating Barnsley’s Kinship Carers this Kinship Care Week

Next week is Kinship Care Week (6 – 12 October 2025) - a national celebration dedicated to recognising the incredible contribution of Kinship Carers across the UK.

Kinship carers are relatives or close friends who step in, often during times of crisis, to care for a child when their parents are unable to do so. They might be grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, or even trusted family friends. Their support ensures children remain connected to their families, communities, and heritage.

Earlier this year, Cabinet approved a new Kinship Care Strategy, designed to enhance the support and resources available to carers and children living in kinship arrangements. The strategy reflects the council’s commitment to ensuring every child in Barnsley can thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.

To begin celebrations for Kinship Care Week 2025, our Fostering team hosted a celebration event at the Town Hall, joined by Kinship Carers and professionals from across the borough, and the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor David Leech. The event was a heartfelt thank you to all our Kinship Carers who make a difference to children’s lives in Barnsley.

The team has planned many events across the week, including other celebration events for Kinship Carers to attend, and information sessions for professionals. Members of the public are also invited to visit drop-in information stands to learn more about kinship caring and fostering:

  • Wednesday 8 October - 11am to 1pm at Tesco near Stairfoot roundabout, Wombwell Ln, S70 3NS

  • Thursday 9 October - 11am to 1pm upstairs in Barnsley Market outside of Family Hubs

Councillor Ashley Peace, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “Barnsley is proud to celebrate Kinship Care Week and the incredible people who make it possible for children to stay with those they know and trust.

When family or friends step up to care for a child, they change that child’s life forever. It’s an act of love and resilience that deserves recognition. Kinship Care Week is our opportunity to say thank you and to shine a light on the vital role these carers play.”
