Church fly-tipper arrested and prosecuted

A Worsbrough resident who dumped bags of waste at the side of a local church has been arrested, prosecuted and fined for fly-tipping and operating without a waste carrier license.

In September 2024, Neighbourhood Wardens received a report of dumped waste at the side of St Thomas Church on Bank End Road, Worsbrough.

Enquiries led to Harvey Bratby, 24, of Monkspring, Worsbrough, who admitted fly-tipping and operating without a waste carrier license.

After failing to appear at court, Mr Bratby was arrested and detained for several hours in police cells before pleading guilty to the offences at Barnsley Magistrates Court.

Mr Bratby was sentenced to a Community Order for 12 months with the condition of completing 150 hours of unpaid work in the community, as well as a fine of £514.

Councillor Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said:

“This prosecution continues our hard line against fly-tipping across the borough, and we will prosecute anyone who we find responsible for blighting our borough.

“I welcome the sentence that has been handed down to Mr Bratby to show that we won’t tolerate this behaviour within Barnsley.

“I’d like to thank our wardens, the Safer Communities team and our litigation team for their help and hard work in these prosecutions.”
