Cricket legend and Freeman of Barnsley Dickie Bird’s funeral arrangements

Barnsley will bid farewell to one of its most famous sons Harold Dennis “Dickie” Bird OBE at his funeral on Sunday 19 October.  
Dickie, one of cricket’s most beloved figures, died on 22 September aged 92.  
His funeral will take place at 2pm St Mary’s Church in Barnsley, followed by a private family-only cremation at Barnsley Crematorium.  
It was Dickie’s wish for the funeral to be held at the weekend so that those who did wish to attend could do so.  
There may be some limited seating available inside St Mary’s Church once invited close family and friends have been seated. There will also be speakers to broadcast the service to anyone who wishes to remain outside the church.  
The funeral has been organised by Hammerton’s Funeral Directors, St Mary’s Church, and Dickie’s family. Barnsley Council is supporting by co-ordinating a temporary road closure of St Mary’s Gate outside St Mary’s Church, which will be in place all day.  
There will also be a very brief road closure on Church Lane for a few minutes at about 1.45pm. This will allow the funeral procession to pause for a brief moment of reflection in front of Dickie’s statue on the way to church. 
A book of condolence remains open at Barnsley Town Hall reception. It’s open from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 4.30pm on Friday.
