Final design revealed for Stairfoot improvement scheme

We have now published the final design for the A635/A633 Stairfoot Improvement Scheme, shaped by the feedback you shared during the 2024 public consultation. The updated plans are now available to view on our Transport Projects webpage.

Following your feedback, we have made a number of important improvements to the final design. This includes redesigning the roundabout to reduce congestion and improve journey times, strengthening walking and cycling routes with safer crossings and wider footpaths, and introducing measures to support healthier travel through reduced idling and new landscaping. We have also shaped the scheme to support future housing and employment growth, ensuring long‑term travel reliability for the area.

To learn more about the final design, come along to our drop‑in event on Monday 16 March at Tesco Extra, Wombwell Lane, Barnsley. The session will run from 1pm to 6pm in the Community Room at the back of the store, where the project team will be available to talk through the updated plans and answer questions.

Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:

“I want to thank everyone who took the time to share their views with us during the consultation. Your feedback has played a vital role in shaping the final Stairfoot Improvement Scheme.

“We’ve listened carefully and made meaningful changes to ensure the design reflects local priorities and supports safe, reliable and resilient travel for the future. As part of the final design, we have strengthened active travel routes, improved safety, and created better connections for people walking and cycling.

“We are committed to delivering a scheme that works for residents now and in the years ahead, and we look forward to sharing the updated plans at our engagement event and continuing to work closely with the community as the project progresses.”

If you’re unable to attend, the final design and further details of the improvements are available on the Transport Projects webpage.
