Improvements to Blacker Hill war memorial garden funded by Barnsley Council's Love Where You Live programme
Barnsley Council’s Love Where You Live programme has funded major improvements to Blacker Hill’s war memorial garden.
Hoyland Remembrance and Parade Group have installed two new benches, a flagpole and improved paving at the garden on Barnsley Road.
The project was chosen for support by local councillors for the Hoyland Milton ward and is part of a package of community enhancement projects being developed across all Barnsley wards as part of Love Where You Live.
This initiative is all about championing the people, places and projects that make us proud of our neighbourhoods.
The enhancements to the Blacker Hill memorial garden were completed in good time for remembrance weekend.
The new benches were supplied by a local firm, while paving work was also carried out by a local tradesman.
Cllr Wendy Cain, cabinet spokesperson for public health and communities, said: “The Hoyland Remembrance and Parade Group do a wonderful job of maintaining Hoyland and Blacker Hill’s war memorial gardens and we would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication over the years.
“I’m proud that through our Love Where You Live programme, we have been able to fund them to install a new flagpole, benches and new paving at the Blacker Hill garden, which is a tranquil place to pay tribute and reflect.
“We want everyone to love where they live, and are working with local councillors and community groups to bring forward community enhancement projects like this in every ward in Barnsley.”
This project continues local councillors’ ongoing support of the Hoyland Remembrance and Parade Group, as Hoyland, Milton and Rockingham Ward Alliance contributed funding to this year’s Hoyland Remembrance Parade.
A spokesperson for the group said: “We are grateful for the support of local councillors on this project and to Barnsley Council for the funding through the Love Where You Live programme.”
Barnsley Council is investing £3.5 million into our communities through Love Where You Live to drive real change in our neighbourhoods.
As well as community enhancement projects in every ward, we’ve allocated £2.1 million to parks and green spaces improvements.
We’ve launched a new Housing and Environment Neighbourhood Task Force to tackle excess waste, graffiti and environmental issues across the borough, and our Unity and Inclusion Grants are funding events and projects bringing communities together.
We want everyone to play their part, whether it’s by joining a community clean-up, volunteering, attending an event or activity session or just trying something new. Together, we can make a difference and show our pride in where we live.
