Love Where You Live delivers street scene and safety improvements to Old Town ward

Barnsley Council’s Love Where You Live programme has funded improvements to community safety and the appearance of the street scene in the Old Town ward.

We’re bringing forward community enhancement projects in every Barnsley ward in consultation with local councillors and residents as part of this borough-wide investment in our communities.

Old Town ward has benefitted from a package of Love Where You Live projects:

  • New fencing has been installed in Brierfield Close to create a self-contained green space for residents to enjoy and to prevent anti-social parking.
  • We’ve planted trees at Gawber Road, near Barnsley Hospital, and at Brettas Park, with locations and types chosen in consultation with our parks team and tree officer.
  • We’ve removed a hedge at the corner Honeywell Close to combat anti-social behaviour and open up this location.

Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said: “Love Where You Live is all about investing in our communities and boosting everyone’s pride in calling Barnsley our home.

“Projects like this improve community safety and make our streets more attractive and welcoming.

“We’re proud to be bringing forward projects across Barnsley to enhance our neighbourhoods and I hope people living in the Old Town ward will welcome the results.”

Barnsley Council’s North Area Team worked with Old Town councillors and members of Old Town Ward Alliance to identify the community projects.

They are designed to benefit all residents, with improved safety, secure play areas and better accessibility.

Love Where You Live community enhancement projects are part of a £3.5 million investment by Barnsley Council in our neighbourhoods.

It’s all about celebrating the people, places and projects that make us proud of Barnsley, while creating spaces that we can all enjoy and working together to improve and enhance our communities.

Our dedicated Housing and Environmental Neighbourhood Task Force is making a big difference with clean-ups across the borough, we’re investing £2.1 million in our parks and green spaces and our Unity and Inclusion Grants are funding events and activities bringing people together.

We’re inviting everyone to get involved and help make a difference, whether it’s by joining a community clean-up, volunteering your time, attending local events and activity sessions, or simply trying something new, every action counts.
