Love Where You Live improves parks in Barnsley’s Central Area for families and communities
A range of updates has been delivered at parks and play areas across Central area communities through Barnsley Council’s Love Where You Live programme.
These works are helping to care for the outdoor spaces that families, children and neighbours use throughout the year.
The work forms part of the council’s £2.1 million investment to improve parks across all 21 Barnsley wards.
Shaped by local priorities, projects have focused on practical changes that support everyday use, from safer surfacing and refurbished play equipment to repainting, seating, better paths and improved access.
This activity also sits within a wider programme bringing community enhancement projects to every ward across Barnsley.
In the centre of Barnsley, work has been delivered at Measbrough Dyke, where play equipment and surfacing have been refreshed alongside access improvements. Updates have also taken place at Bluebell Bank play area, Stanhope play area and Brettas Park.
Across Dodworth, several local play areas have seen work carried out.
At Gilroyd Recreation Ground, refurbishment works have refreshed play equipment and extended the usable play space, while Stainbrough Road, Station Road and South Road play areas have also benefitted from updates focused on safety and day-to-day upkeep.
In Kingstone, works have been delivered at Cranbrooke/Raley Street play area, including refreshed surfacing, repainted equipment and access improvements, helping these well-used sites continue to support local families.
The Old Town ward updates have taken place at Wilthorpe Park and Blackburn Lane play area in Gawber, with work ranging from play area refurbishments to repairs and planting that improve the wider park setting.
In Worsbrough, work has included updates to Highstone Recreational Ground and New England Recreation Ground, where the multi-use games area has been refurbished to support active play. Further projects are also planned at Worsbrough Dale Park.
Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“Love Where You Live is about taking care of the places people return to again and again, whether that’s a local play area, a kickabout space or a park path.
“By focusing on practical, visible changes, we’re helping these spaces stay welcoming, safe and ready to be enjoyed by families and communities now and into the future.”
Alongside these park updates, Love Where You Live has delivered repaired noticeboards, new planting and refreshed multi-use games areas, supporting safer and more accessible community spaces across the borough.
Together, the work delivered so far reflects Barnsley Council’s ongoing commitment to creating vibrant, well-connected neighbourhoods.
Further projects are planned across Central area communities, including Dearne Valley Country Park in Hoyle Mill, Churchfields, Warren Quarry Lane, Spring Street and Sugdens Play areas and Worsbrough Dale Park, as the Love Where You Live programme continues to roll out.
