New Barnsley Dearne 2040 Vision and Masterplan sets ambitious vision for the future of the Dearne

The Barnsley Dearne 2040 Vision and Masterplan marks a major milestone in long‑term plans to reshape and revitalise the Dearne. It will bring together a series of transformational opportunities designed to strengthen local communities, improve connectivity, support new housing, and attract investment across the area.

The Vision and Masterplan outlines a clear plan for the Dearne, with opportunities identified in Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe, Bolton upon Dearne and surrounding neighbourhoods. It focuses on improving the town centre, boosting active travel connectivity, enhancing green spaces, and creating a stronger sense of place for residents, visitors and businesses.

Developed through partnership working across housing, regeneration, transport and communities, the Barnsley Dearne 2040 Vision and Masterplan will act as a blueprint for securing local, regional and national funding, supporting private‑sector investment, and guiding future development.

The Cabinet report also seeks approval to begin a five‑week public consultation, allowing residents, businesses and community organisations to help shape the final vision.

Councillor Robin Franklin, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: "The Barnsley Dearne 2040 Vision and Masterplan represents a bold and ambitious step forward for the area. It brings together everything residents have told us they value: strong communities, better connectivity, thriving high streets and opportunities for future generations.

"By setting out a clear and deliverable plan, we can attract the investment needed to make these aspirations a reality. We’re looking forward to hearing from people during the consultation and working together to shape a positive future for the Dearne."

Following Cabinet consideration, the draft Vision and Masterplan will be opened for consultation later this month. Feedback will be used to refine the final strategy, ensuring it reflects the community’s priorities and ambitions.

Residents will be able to take part online, at local events and through a range of engagement activities across the Dearne.
