New junior fun run promises an unforgettable summer event
We’re excited to announce the launch of our brand-new, free Barnsley Junior Fun Run, taking place on Sunday 28 June 2026 and open to young people aged 8 to 14. Families can secure their place by registering now via Eventbrite.
The event, organised by the Sport and Physical Activity team, will see the Junior Fun Run start at 11.30am, giving young people the perfect opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and watch the Barnsley 10k first before taking part. With 300 places available, families are encouraged to sign up early.
Participants will take on a lively one‑mile route, completing two laps of the Town Centre before finishing back at the start point. Along the way, they’ll pass through four themed zones, each created to entertain, motivate and make the day truly memorable:
-
Zone 1 – Hype Highway
-
Zone 2 – Bubble Boulevard
-
Zone 3 – Water Blast Alley (participants will get wet!)
-
Zone 4 – Victory Lane
Expect music, foam fingers, bubble machines, water guns, and a great time along the route.
Every young runner who crosses the finish line will receive a Junior Fun Run medal as a keepsake of their achievement.
Councillor James Higginbottom, Cabinet spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to be launching our first ever Junior Fun Run right in the heart of Barnsley Town Centre – a fantastic new addition to the town’s events calendar.
“After listening to feedback from residents, we’re proud to introduce an event that gives even more young people the chance to get involved and enjoy being active. This is a brilliant opportunity to bring families together, celebrate our young people, and inspire active, healthy lifestyles in a truly fun and energetic environment.
“Thanks to the fantastic success of the Barnsley 10k, we’re proud to offer this event completely free. We can’t wait to see hundreds of young runners taking on the route, powering through the themed zones, and soaking up the colour, noise and excitement from start to finish. It’s going to be an amazing day for everyone involved.”
The Junior Run is capped at 300 places, and these are expected to go quickly, so don’t miss out and sign up via Eventbrite. A huge thank you to everyone who entered the Barnsley 10k; your entry has helped make the free Junior Fun Run possible.
