Our latest performance report celebrates a growing local economy

Our town centre has been thriving in quarter one, keeping up the trend of growing footfall each year. Over April, May and June 2025, town centre footfall exceeded the quarter one target by 2%. Key town centre events included Armed Forces Day, Barnsley Live, The Garden Party, and the ever-popular Barnsley 10K.

During that period, we’ve also seen 299 private sector jobs created following support from our Enterprising Barnsley service. That means we’ve already achieved 44% of our annual target in quarter one alone. In February, we announced a support package for businesses in Barnsley. It's great to the first quarter off to a strong start for local job growth.

These fantastic achievements are highlighted as part of our latest performance report. Other highlights from the report include:

Healthy Barnsley

  • Our Initial Response team are working with more residents so they can get Adult Social Care help early. The team exceeded their quarter one target, which is helping to connect more residents to information, advice and support.

Learning Barnsley

  • Currently, 13.4% of children and young people in schools are receiving SEN Support, which means they are getting extra help with their learning due to special educational needs. This percentage is the highest we’ve ever recorded and is higher than the 13% reported in January 2024.

  • There has been a decrease in the number of young people aged 10 to 17 years entering the Youth Justice System for the first time. Between April and June 2025, there has been a 27.3% decrease from the figure reported in the previous quarter.

Sustainable Barnsley

  • In our last performance report, the number of visitors to our museums was a key highlight. In quarter one, we have already seen over 675,000 visits.

Enabling Barnsley

  • We’ve seen a rise in the percentage of people with disabilities working at the council and people from ethnic minority backgrounds. We’re proud of the growing diversity of our workforce.

Councillor Robert Frost, Cabinet Spokesperson for Core Services, said: “Our quarter one performance report showcases a strong start to the financial year. It’s fantastic to see our local economy thriving. The key highlights show how we’re supporting more people to benefit from Barnsley – the place of possibilities. These achievements would not be possible without our communities, partners and ambitious teams.”

Our latest performance report will be discussed at Cabinet on Wednesday 17 September. You can find more information about the report in the cabinet papers. Learn more about our progress to achieve our ambitions for the borough and areas for improvement on the Barnsley Council website.
