Penistone Library reopens next week after transformation into modern community hub
We’re looking forward to inviting everybody back to Penistone Library next week after a major refurbishment to make the much-loved community venue even more welcoming.
Book lovers will be able to visit the new-look library from Monday 20 April.
The transformed Penistone Library brings a modern and flexible library space together with a range of public services under one roof.
This project is part of our ongoing Libraries Refurbishment Programme to invest in modern and accessible community spaces, with 11 total refurbishments now complete.
The works included major building infrastructure improvements and full-fibre broadband internet connectivity, representing a significant investment to future-proof the site for years to come.
This project also supports our ambition to continue developing services in our Principal Towns to help our local areas thrive and build stronger, more connected communities.
Demolition works began last July before our partners Creative Building Projects started work on the refurbishment, which has now been completed on schedule.
The new library will include an enhanced children’s area with a colourful design featuring a vibrant mural of Penistone railway viaduct and the surrounding rolling hills.
There’s new furniture and shelving throughout, and improved access to the Dransfield Collection, a significant local history resource for Penistone.
The refurbished Penistone Library will also be home to a range of local services, including:
- BYouth Young People's Service
- Penistone Family Hub
- NHS Midwifery Team
- Barnsley 0-19 Public Health Nursing Service
- Barnsley Council’s Penistone Area Team
- DIAL
- Barnsley Council Adult Skills and Community Learning, incorporating the targeted information, advice and guidance (TIAG) service
- Citizen’s Advice
By bringing a range of services together on one site instead of operating from different buildings, we are able to reduce costs and make the most efficient use of our facilities.
South Yorkshire Police’s Barnsley West Neighbourhood Team will also operate from the library building.
Anna Hartley, Executive Director for Public Health and Communities, said:
“We can’t wait to invite everyone back to the modern, welcoming Penistone Library.
“The new-look library will be a colourful, comfortable and flexible place to spend time, whether you want to settle down with a good book, get stuck into a family activity or do a couple of hours of studying.
“Our libraries are not just places to borrow a book, they’re hubs for the community, so I’m pleased we’ve been able to bring the library services people enjoy together with other vital services under one roof.”
