Road safety improvements coming to Great Houghton
We’re taking action to improve road safety in Great Houghton following feedback from local residents, community groups and ward councillors.
Recently, we met with local residents and heard clearly their concerns about the condition of the existing speed cushions in Great Houghton. Following this feedback, we’ve investigated and developed a new solution that puts safety first while responding to community needs.
The current speed humps, which have become loose and worn over time, will be replaced with new pre-cast concrete speed cushions. These will be bolted directly onto the road surface, offering a more durable and effective traffic calming measure. The new design also allows vehicles, including buses, to straddle the cushions more comfortably, reducing noise and improving passenger experience. 30 new cushions will be installed in sets of twos and threes on High Street and Rotherham Road.
Cllr James Higginbottom, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said: "We’ve listened carefully to what local residents and councillors have told us and are committed to making sure Barnsley’s roads remain safe for all road users.
“These improvements will make a real difference to road safety in Great Houghton, and I’m pleased we’re able to deliver a solution that reflects community needs.”
The new cushions are expected to be installed in the coming months, subject to weather conditions and supplier lead times. For more information about road safety in Barnsley, visit www.barnsley.gov.uk/Roadsafety
