Smithies man arrested and fined after burning his fly-tipped waste

A Smithies resident has been arrested, prosecuted and fined just under £1,900 for burning his own fly-tipping.

On 16 December 2024, wardens received a report of fly tipped waste being burnt on Smithies Lane. CCTV enquiries identified William Smith, 61, of Smithies Lane, Barnsley as a suspect.

After failing to appear at court, Mr Smith was arrested by police officers and detained in court cells before pleading guilty to fly-tipping on Thursday 25 September.

He was sentenced to a fine of £1,889.60 for the offences.

Councillor Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said:

“I welcome the sentence and the significant fine that has been given to Mr Smith as part of our zero-tolerance approach to fly-tipping in Barnsley.

“We will continue to prosecute anyone who is found to be responsible for blighting our borough and show that this behaviour and any environmental offences won’t be tolerated.

“I’d like to thank our wardens, the Safer Communities team and our litigation team for their help and hard work in these prosecutions.”
