Two-day Digital Symposium inspires students and showcases Barnsley’s growing digital ambition
Barnsley’s first Digital Symposium has inspired more than 400 Barnsley College students by bringing the world of digital careers to life. As part of our Great Childhoods Ambition, the event delivered two packed days of hands-on digital experiences, cutting-edge technology, and direct access to some of the leading innovators in the sector.
Held on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 December at Barnsley Digital Media Centre, Barnsley Civic and Barnsley College SciTech Centre, the event was delivered in partnership between Barnsley Council, Barnsley College, and over 20 leading digital organisations.
Over two days, students took part in a series of workshops and talks designed to explore real career pathways, build confidence in engaging with employers, and gain a deeper understanding of the skills and roles shaping the digital sector.
Students heard directly from high-profile industry partners including Microsoft and HSBC, who delivered insightful sessions on emerging technologies and the skills that will shape the jobs of tomorrow. They were also inspired by organisations like Deadline Digital, Into Games, and PitStop Productions, whose sessions explored everything from cutting-edge storytelling to careers in video production, sound design, and the future of gaming.
The Digital Symposium plays a key role in Barnsley Council’s Great Childhoods Ambition, which is dedicated to making sure every child and young person in Barnsley can have the best possible childhood and opportunities, no matter their background. By investing in opportunities, support, and experiences, we’re helping the next generation to dream big, grow in confidence, and develop the skills they need for a successful future.
The symposium also supports one of the key missions in our Inclusive Economic Growth Strategy to become the UK’s leading digital town, leading the way in digital innovation, skills, and opportunity. By strengthening relationships between educators and employers, the event has laid the foundations for long-term partnerships that will continue to open doors for young people across Barnsley’s digital economy, equipping them with the vital skills they need to succeed in the modern workplace.
Councillor Ashley Peace, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “The Digital Symposium really demonstrates our dedication to providing young people with the skills, inspiration, and opportunities they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world. By connecting them with industry leaders and emerging technologies, we’re reinforcing Barnsley’s position as a place where ambition and talent are supported and celebrated.”
Gill Kelly, Head of Digital and Creative Industries at Barnsley College, said: “Barnsley College is proud to have played a central role in the Digital Symposium, giving more than 400 students the chance to experience first-hand the technologies, skills, and industry connections that are shaping the future of work. These opportunities are vital because they help young people explore real career pathways, build confidence in engaging with employers, and develop the digital skills that businesses need. By connecting education with innovation, the symposium ensures that Barnsley’s next generation is equipped to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital economy. This event reflects our commitment to preparing students not just for jobs, but for successful, fulfilling careers in a sector that is driving growth and transformation across the region and beyond.”
Andrew Bushell, Regional Account Director at Microsoft UK, said: “The Microsoft Local Government team is proud to support Barnsley’s Digital Symposium. We look forward to sharing insights on emerging technologies and the digital skills shaping tomorrow’s workforce. Our goal is to inspire confidence, ignite creativity, and equip the next generation with the tools they need to thrive in the digital economy.”
