Ward alliance funding paves way for improved access for all at Wombwell football club
A community sports club has become more accessible for all thanks to funding from Wombwell Ward Alliance.
Wombwell Town Football Club has a new wheelchair ramp outside its clubhouse on Station Road.
The new addition comes after significant investment in the sports club through Barnsley Council’s Principal Towns and Local Centres Programme.
We funded electrical works, damp-proofing, redecoration of the clubhouse, improvements to the toilets and installation of a new decking area to help.
Mark Shakespeare, commercial manager for Wombwell Town FC, said: “Since the wheelchair ramp and handrail has been fitted at the football club, we have seen such a positive response from our supporters.
“The more elderly fans now have a safer entrance into our clubhouse and most of all we can now give access to mobility scooters without any trouble at all.”
Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, Cllr Wendy Cain, said: “I am so pleased Wombwell Ward Alliance were able to support this project.
“Wombwell Town Football Club is a great community club, providing sporting opportunities to people of all ages, and this investment will making it even more welcoming for everyone.
“Our ward alliances play an integral role in helping to build stronger, more connected communities and a Barnsley we can all be proud to call home.”
Ward Alliance members play an integral role in Barnsley, volunteering their time to helping their communities to thrive. They help shape local priorities and have a small budget called a ward alliance fund to support key projects.
Their work supports the aims of Barnsley's Council's Love Where You Live campaign.
It’s all about working together, listening to each other, and making a real difference in our communities. To find out more, visit barnsley.gov.uk/LoveWhereYouLive.
