Young learners in the spotlight at this year’s Children’s University graduation event

Yesterday, children aged 5 to 11 from schools across Barnsley had the opportunity to celebrate their achievements at the annual Children’s University graduation event. The programme, which began with a pilot involving four schools, has grown to offer a wide range of learning opportunities outside of the school curriculum—including activities before school, after school, at weekends, and during holidays—enabling children to discover new skills, pursue their ambitions and develop for the future.

At the heart of the Children’s University is the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams and fulfil their potential. Supported by our borough’s Great Childhoods Ambition programme, the event recognised the positive impact that extra-curricular learning has had on children’s attainment, attendance, and wellbeing.

Since its launch, Children’s University has made a remarkable difference in Barnsley. More than 1,112 children and young people have earned credits through an incredible 32,415 hours of dedicated learning in their own time. This year, 69 children from six schools completed over 100 hours of learning, with 6 children surpassing 200 hours and 2 children going above and beyond to achieve more than 300 hours.

All activities as part of the Children’s University are validated against a skills builder framework that helps children develop essential skills such as creativity, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills that are vital for their future. The activities cover a diverse range of topics, including arts, sports, science, technology, languages, and more, broadening horizons and supporting the ambitions of all children in our borough.

To mark the occasion, children who have achieved Gold within the programme donned ceremonial caps and gowns and received their certificates at the graduation ceremony. This special moment not only celebrated academic progress but also recognised the commitment, curiosity and effort of everyone involved.

Cllr Trevor Cave, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said: “We want to work with people across the borough, from education providers and partners to local businesses and communities to support the ambitions of all children. By encouraging collaboration and celebrating the achievements of our young people, we are laying strong foundations for their future success. Every contribution, large or small, helps us inspire the next generation to dream bigger and reach higher. Together, we can make great childhoods possible in Barnsley.”

As part of the development of Barnsley’s Children’s University, we are also looking for local learning providers that host enriching activities for children and young people to join the Barnsley Children’s University offer.
