Adult social care

Autistic spectrum conditions

Autism is a spectrum condition, meaning it can affect people differently. Asperger syndrome is a form of autism.

Many people with autism share specific difficulties. They may:

  • find it hard to interact with other people
  • find it hard to understand how others think or feel
  • find things like bright lights or loud noises overwhelming
  • become anxious or upset in unfamiliar situations
  • take longer to understand information
  • do or think the same things over and over

Diagnosing autism

Sometimes people with autism go through life without their condition being recognised or diagnosed. If you think you may have autism, you may choose to have your condition diagnosed as it may help you to access support from local services.

Find out how to get an autism diagnosis on the NHS website.
