Get an extra grey, blue or brown bin

We offer an extra bin capacity service to larger households of six people or more. If you’re fully using your recycling bins but you've still got too much waste to fit in your bins, you can apply for an extra grey, blue or brown bin.

Charges

There's a charge of £31 to apply for an extra grey bin. There's no charge to apply for an extra blue or brown bin.

How to apply

You can use our online form below to apply for an extra bin. You'll need to provide the following evidence for everyone living at your property:

  • For adults:
    • bank/credit card statement (dated in the last three months); or
    • utility bill (dated in the last three months)

  • For children:
    • copy of the child's annual Child Benefit award letter; or
    • bank statement

  • For students:
    • bank statement (dated in the last three months); or
    • letter from higher education establishment confirming their attendance and home address

All documents must clearly show your address.

You can upload your evidence when you fill in the online form, or post your documents after you've applied to: Waste Management, Smithies Lane Depot, Barnsley, S71 1NL. If you post your documents to us, please write your application reference number on each document.

What happens next

When we've received your application and all of your evidence, we’ll visit your property and work with you to look at the best rubbish and recycling solution for your household.

If we think you need an extra grey, blue or brown bin we'll deliver one. If we think you need to use your existing bins more effectively, we’ll advise you how to do this. If you've paid for an extra grey bin but we don't think you're eligible, we'll refund you the £31.

As long as you use the bins as agreed, we'll continue to empty your extra bin. We may reclaim the extra bin(s) and return you to a regular service if:

  • you can't keep to the recycling arrangement for any reason
  • the number of people permanently living at your home drops to less than six

Changes in circumstances

If you move house you need to tell us your new address and must take your extra bin with you.

You also need to tell us if you no longer have six people living permanently in your home, as you'll no longer qualify for the extra bin(s). We’ll then contact you to make arrangements to pick the extra bin(s) up.
