We have targets from central government and local plans in place to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
How we are doing
The year on year increase in the amount of waste produced is one of the biggest waste management problems that we have to deal with.
Our Municipal Waste Management Strategy sets out how we intend to:
- reduce the total amount of waste Barnsley produces
- make improvements so that half of the waste produced is either recycled or composted
- where possible to recover energy from the rest of our waste and bury as little as possible in landfill sites
We're also working closely with neighbouring councils at Doncaster and Rotherham in a project known as the BDR Waste Partnership. The aim of this partnership is to provide long-term and environmentally aware waste facilities to treat and dispose of the waste that can’t be recycled.
You can find more information and legislation on the management of waste in these documents.
