What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding means protecting children from abuse and preventing them from any harm to their health or development.
We want to make sure that Barnsley is a safe place for children and young people to grow up. If you're a young person and think that you're being mistreated, or you know someone who is, you'll find a list of services that can help to keep you safe in this website. If you're a parent, carer or a professional working to keep young people safe, you'll be able to access all of the information you need here, including our policies and procedures.
Barnsley Safeguarding Children Board is responsible for bringing local services together to plan and agree how best to keep children and young people in the area safe.
The Board develops shared policies and plans to protect vulnerable children. Their role is to make sure all children are well cared for and able to reach their full potential. They also provide support and training for people who work with children and young people, to make sure that they are fully aware of their safeguarding responsibilities.
You'll find information about keeping yourself safe in this website, as well as advice about what to do if you're feeling threatened or you know someone who is.
Being a parent is extremely rewarding, but sometimes it isn't easy. You can find out more about how to keep your child safe here, and how to get help if you're having some family difficulties.
Early help is the support we give to children, young people and families to prevent their needs becoming greater over time. It's delivered through targeted help, family centres and other services in the community.
Barnsley Safeguarding Children Board procedures and other policies are available to download here. These documents define and guide the safeguarding role of all agencies working with children and young people.
Every safeguarding board must have a Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) to investigate any allegations against people working with children and young people. You can find out more about the LADO and contact them directly here.
The Barnsley Family Service Directory provides a range of information on all services available to parents and carers.
You can use it to search for childcare providers, healthcare, groups and activities to support you and your child in the local area.
If you're a service provider you can apply to be included in our directory.
