Safeguarding Awareness Week 2022

We’ve had another successful week that ran from 21 to 27 November.  Featuring events for the public, professionals and volunteers.  Helping to keep adults, children and young people in Barnsley safe.

Our Barnsley Safeguarding Adults Board and Children’s Partnership arranged free events throughout the week. This helped people to learn more about safeguarding.  Also helping to promote services and help that’s available.

Safeguarding Awareness Week at Barnsley Markets

Throughout the week, we’re taking over Barnsley Markets to help you learn more about the available support. It'll help to keep adults, children and young people safe in Barnsley. Our services and partners will be on hand to answer any questions you have on the following days:

As well as their stall at Barnsley Markets, our Housing and Community Safety team will be out across the borough. They'll be offering help and advice during Safeguarding Awareness Week.

Come and speak to the team to learn more about crime and anti-social behaviour, housing, support with the rising cost of living and more money in your pocket. You can find them at:

Events for the public

Exodus Project - Monday 21 to Friday 25 November

The Exodus Project organises mid week activity clubs in the heart of less advantaged communities. Their clubs for 8-11's are called Kidz Klub and their youth groups are known as Rock Solid.

They'll have a keeping safe from harm and abuse theme at their activity clubs during safeguarding week.

Fire engine and safeguarding stall in Glass Works Square – Tuesday 22 November

Organised by our Safeguarding Children’s Partnership, come down to The Glass Works Square on Tuesday 22 November. You'll be able to learn more about safeguarding in Barnsley.

Visit our stall, take a picture with the fire engine and speak to our friendly team to find out how we can keep our communities safe and free from harm.

Whether you want to learn more about what safeguarding means, find out what support is available locally or ask questions to the team, pop down between 9.30am and 4pm.

Keeping your children safe online - Tuesday 22 November 

Do you know how to use parental controls on your child's device? Come along to learn how to restrict unsuitable content on devices.

Your Digital Safety sessions – Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 November

Our Digital Champions will be at Penistone Library on Tuesday 22 November and Library @ the Lightbox on Wednesday 23 November. It'll be a practical session aimed at anyone who is worried about online safety or who wants to learn more about keeping themselves safe online.

The sessions, which run from 10am to 11.30am, will look at how to stay safe online. Examples of what we can help with include shopping, booking tickets or holidays and using email. We also help with recognising fake websites and phishing emails and texts, creating strong passwords and protecting your device from viruses.

Targeted youth support - Wednesday 23 November

A youth club session providing a safe space for young people aged 13-19.  Come along to Cudworth IKIC, Snydale Road, Cudworth 7pm to 9pm.

Barnsley Safe Places Walk - Thursday 24 November

On Thursday 24 November, we're bringing back our popular Barnsley Safe Places Walk. Join us from 1pm to 3pm to learn more about our Safe Places and the great work happening to make sure everyone can enjoy the town centre safely.

Keeping safe in your home, online and in the community - Thursday 24 November

Join us on Thursday 24 November (11am to 2.30pm) at Barnsley Town Hall to learn more about how you can help your communities stay safe and keep well this winter.

Organised by our Safeguarding Adults Board, this free event is your chance to learn more about the support adult safeguarding offers in Barnsley. We'll also be joined by South Yorkshire Police, who will share top tips for staying safe online, and let you know about the help available through more money in your pocket and warm homes.

CPR training - Thursday 24 November 

Do you know how to save a life? Come along to our 2 hour session to learn how to deal with CPR, heart attacks and serious bleeds.  You'll get a certificate when you finish the course.

Monday 21 November

Dealing with disclosures of sexual abuse - 10am to 12.30pm

The session will cover, different types of disclosure.  Showing confidence in responding to disclosure appropriately.  Understand your responsibilities having heard a disclosure and finally recognise best practice when managing disclosure.

Working with parents with mental health issues - 10.30am to 12pm

Promoting greater understanding of the links between child protection and adults with mental health.  Explore the impact of mental health problems on parental capacity.  Looking at the responding to the developmental needs of their children.  Provide an overview of mental health conditions and how symptoms may medication may affect parenting.

Safeguarding Awareness Week launch event - 1pm to 4pm

We're coming together with our safeguarding partners across South Yorkshire for a special conference celebrating the launch of Safeguarding Awareness Week.

Safeguarding Adults and Children's Boards across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield are getting together to learn from each other. We'll also be celebrating key achievements.

Held at Doncaster Racecourse, the launch event will look at how we can unlock customer voices and keep adults and children safe in the current financial climate. We're working with the South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) on our safeguarding agenda.

Reducing parent conflict - 5.30pm to 8pm 

Raising awareness of parental conflict and it's impact on children.  Looking at the research and data around this and increase your confidence when looking at the difference between parental conflict and domestic abuse.  Discussing where to signpost parents to appropriate services.

Learning from Safeguarding Adults Reviews workshop - 9.30am to 12.30pm

Organised by our Safeguarding Adults Board, join us for your chance to reflect on your own practice. You'll also get the chance to learn from recent local and national Safeguarding Adults Reviews (SARs).

Designed for staff working with adults with care and support needs, this online training session will be your chance to learn about the key teachings, tools and guidance developed from recent reviews.

Safeguarding children and domestic abuse - 10am to 12pm

Organised by Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS), join us to learn more about how we can support children with domestic abuse. Designed for staff working with children and young people in Barnsley, this online training session will be your chance to learn more about:

  • protecting children and young people from domestic abuse
  • the realities and effects of domestic abuse on children and families
  • the resources available to help victims of domestic abuse

Safe and well referral process - 10am to 11am 

Delivered by South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service this online event offers advice on fire safety. 

Looking at the common causes of fire, visible warning signs.  Identifying people who are at increased risk of having a dire and understanding how to make a referral to SYFR.

What to do about self-neglect, learning from best practice - 12pm to 1.30pm

Organised by North East ADASS's Safeguarding Network, join us to learn how we can help people impacted by self-neglect.

Bringing together speakers from leading charities, universities and local councils, this online event is your chance to learn more about self-neglect, the signs to look out for and possible triggers. It focuses on best practice around working with people impacted by self-neglect. The event will also help you understand how you can help someone if you're worried.

Early Help - perfecting the paperwork - 12pm to 2.30pm 

Increase your knowledge and confidence in using Early Help paperwork.  Looking at Early Help Assessments and clear action plans.  Seeing how to capture the family voice within the paperwork.

Supporting children and young people through loss and bereavement - 1pm to 3pm 

A 2 hour session looking at psychological responses to loss and bereavement.  Looking at how a child's age and development affects their understanding of death. Also looking at how to support children returning to school.

Reducing parental conflict toolkit - 9.30am to 1pm 

A morning session at Jump Family Centre looking at recognising relationship distress and potential damages.  

Building practitioner confidence and skills by using effective listening and questioning tools.  Looking at the toolkit and enabling staff to support parents and young people.

Barnardo’s open day - 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm

Join us at Barnardo’s Safeguarding Awareness Week open day and learn more about the help available to help keep young people in Barnsley safe and well.

This is your chance to learn more about the different services Barnardo’s offers. You can speak to the team and hear about their amazing work to support local young people.

Child sexual exploitation and sexual coercion refresher and the RESPECT programme - 9.30am to 10.30pm

This course will cover an overview of CSE and sexual coercion and how to refer to the Spectrum RESPECT Programme.

Thursday 24 November

Self-neglect and hoarding conference - 9.15am to 4.30pm

Organised by our Safeguarding Adults Board, join us Thursday 24 November to learn how we can work together in Barnsley to help people at risk of self-neglect and hoarding.

Designed for staff supporting adults across the borough, this online conference will feature talks from Hoarding UK, MIND, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and our local D'Clutter group. This event is your chance to learn more about the help offered by partners and consider how partnership working can help meet people's needs and reduce their risk.

Understanding the child death process - 10am to 11.30am 

The session will give a better understanding from initiation to completion of the child death process.  It will give an explanation as to why the process was introduced and it's benefits.  Giving guidance on the role of the practitioner in the process.

The principles of restorative practice - 10.30am to 12pm

Looking at the relationship window and the importance of working with families rather than to, for or not. The five key principles of restorative practice and how to apply them.  Learning basic skills of restorative conversation and how to use them with families.  Looking at the wider perspectives on cases and how to balance this with an impartial manner.

Online harms - 2pm to 4pm

The course will explore how children and young people use technology.  Looking at various online harms that exist across various platforms.  The potential consequences of these online harms on young people's development.  Looking at various ways of supporting and educating families and their children to stay safe online.

Guidance around how to support harmful sexual behaviour in schools.  Looking at definition, influences, reporting/recording and self assessment tool kits.

Ey up dad - engaging with the men in children's lives - 9.30am to 12.30pm

Join us for the regional conference.  Explore the topic of engaging fathers, partners and other important men in practice from various viewpoints.  Including men's lived experience, attachment, bonding, mental health.  Also learning from reviews, practice tips and sharing knowledge.

Domestic abuse and supporting older people webinar - 10am to 12pm

Organised by Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS), join us to learn more about how we can help older people with domestic abuse.

Designed by staff working with older people and families in Barnsley, this online training session will be your chance to learn more about:

  • recognising and assisting older victims of domestic abuse, including how we can help them access services
  • the impacts and effects of domestic abuse on older people
  • the complexities older people may experience in abusive situations
  • helpful services and local pathways for getting older people the help they need

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue 

We're committed to making South Yorkshire safer and stronger. We have a duty to promote fire safety, particularly to those who are the most vulnerable or experience barriers in accessing our services. We know we cannot tackle fire safety issues alone.

Analysis of each incident has found common factors involved in almost of all our recent fire deaths. For example hoarding, social isolation, and substance misuse and mental health problems. For reasons such as these, many house fire victims were already known to at least one other agency. Sadly, in most cases, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue was not one of these agencies.

Most of these deaths could have been prevented but we need your help.
