Safeguarding Awareness Week 2025
This year Safeguarding Awareness Week will run across two weeks from Monday 17 to Friday 28 November 2025. It's a time for people to come together to raise the importance of safeguarding issues.
We'll have events running throughout the week and beyond. We'll continue to update this page until Safeguarding Awareness Week as more events are organised.

Events for the public
We'll be running stalls in Barnsley Market all week so come along and visit us.
Exodus Project will also have out of school clubs with a keeping safe theme running throughout the week.
Monday 17 November
Cranstoun
Time: 9am to 4pm
Venue: Barnsley Market
Description: Inspire to Change has been designed to help participants learn new skills and find better ways to manage and control their abusive behaviour. It encourages participants to think and behave more positively to prevent harm to their partner, children and family in the future.
Inspire to Change also delivers the Level Up Program, for young people aged 11 to 15 years, presenting harmful behaviours to their family members or intimate partners. Find out more about Cranstoun.
Shared lives
Time: 9am to 4pm
Venue: Barnsley Market
Description: Shared lives is a unique care and support service for people who want to live independently in their local area with the help of a family and community network. Shared lives carers welcome people in need of a little extra support into their homes, making them feel part of the family. They may move in and live as part of the carer’s household, or benefit from day support and respite care.
We’re looking for kind, compassionate people to join us as shared lives carers and open up their homes to help someone who needs a little extra support. If you’re passionate about helping people live their best lives and have previous caring experience from working in care or caring for a loved one, we'd love to hear from you. Description: IDAS offers a range of free and confidential services to help people cope with, and recover from, the traumatic effects of domestic abuse and sexual violence. Our support is open to everyone irrespective of age, sex, gender, ethnicity, disability or immigration status.
Waythrough (Barnsley Recovery Steps)
Time: 9am to 4pm
Venue: Barnsley Market
Description: A service for all ages, offering free and confidential support to individuals seeking to change their relationship with alcohol and other drugs. They also offer support for parents, carers, and professionals in Barnsley who work with young people. Whether you’re seeking advice or guidance, even if the young person isn’t ready to access their services yet, they are here to help.
They provide support with physical, emotional, and mental health needs, including needle exchange, recovery and detox programs, one-on-one and group therapy, housing support, financial management, social activities, education, training, and employment opportunities. Description: Health visitors and school nursing teams support and help children and young people aged 0 to 19 and their families and carers to be safe, live healthier lifestyles and achieve their full potential. Our support begins in late pregnancy and until children reach 19 years. If the young person has special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) we support them up to 25 years of age. Base 71
Time: 9am to 4pm
Venue: Barnsley Market
Description: An exciting new youth centre where young people in Barnsley can connect, grow, socialise, and develop.
Opening in January 2026, Base71 will be the first Youth Zone in Yorkshire, offering a world-class space with over 20 activities every session for young people aged eight to 19 (or up to 25 for those with additional needs). From sports and fitness to creative arts, cooking, and employability workshops, there will be something for everyone to explore and enjoy.
Staffed by skilled youth workers and supported by dedicated volunteers, Base71 will be much more than a youth centre – it will be a place where young people find encouragement, guidance, and opportunities to unlock their potential. Visit Base 71 Facebook page.
Beacon South Yorkshire

Description: A small charity that help to support unpaid carers emotionally from the stresses of their day to day caring role. Beacon South Yorkshire will be about to wellbeing strategies to carers and to ensure them that they are not alone and can access the services that they need. Find out more about Beacon.

Barnsley Support Hub (non-clinical mental health crisis hub)
Time: 9am to 4pm
Venue: Barnsley Market
Description: The Barnsley Support Hub offers free mental health support in a welcoming, comfortable, non-judgmental, and non-clinical environment. Our experienced staff team is available to provide emotional, social, and practical support if you are in crisis or heading toward a crisis.
You can come just for a chat, or to access one-to-one emotional support from trained mental health professionals. We also offer help in creating staying well and crisis plans, and support visitors to access other services and organisations that may be useful to them. Find out more about Barnsley Support Hub.

D'Clutter Club
Time: 9am to 4pm
Venue: Barnsley Market
Description: The D’Clutter Club will be available to talk about their peer lead group supporting people who clutter or hoard. It is a chance to talk to other people who experience cluttering and how they help each other.
The D’Clutter Club meets on the last Tuesday of each month in the Events Room of the Lightbox. There is no need to book. The group is free to attend, but people experiencing cluttering or hoarding, friends, family and their supporters. Find out more about D'Clutter Club.

Corporate Assurance and Fraud Team

Description: The Corporate Assurance Team at Barnsley Council are supporting #FraudAwarenessWeek, which we’re supporting locally to help protect you - our residents, communities and businesses, against all types of fraud and scams. Exodus Project out of school clubs

Description: The Exodus Project organises mid-week activity clubs in the heart of less advantaged communities. Their clubs for 8 to 11's are called Kidz Klub and their youth groups are known as Rock Solid. They'll have a keeping safe from harm and abuse theme at their activity clubs during safeguarding week.

Monday 17 November
Safeguarding Awareness Week launch event: Protecting adults from exploitation
Time: 9:30am to 12:30pm

Description:
- For organisations and professionals who've an opportunity to identify and tackle exploitation in communities.
- Highlight the importance of exploitation prevention and support, for people at all stages of life, from childhood through to older adults.
- Look at Barnsley’s new Exploitation Strategy and what it means for services.
- Expert speaker that has been leading a specialist service in Adult Social Care to support people who have experienced, and are experiencing, exploitation.

Prioritising child sexual abuse roadshow

Description: An engaging day of talks and workshops exploring child sexual abuse, in partnership with the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse. This roadshow event is designed to help you and your colleagues identify and respond to child sexual abuse and confidently support children and families. Throughout the day you will be signposted to helpful advice and guidance to support you in giving victims, survivors and families affected by child sexual abuse the support they need. There will be a number of keynote speakers who are expert in their field.

Children and young people who have displayed harmful sexual behaviour: An introduction

Transitional safeguarding masterclass

Description: This 3 hour interactive masterclass will:
- clarify what transitional safeguarding is, and is not

Signs of safety 2 day briefing

Description: Only available to social workers and early help professionals.

The two days will give you an overview of the basics of signs of safety to equip you to use in your day-to-day practice. You'll get the opportunity to learn about the main principles of signs of safety, language used, assessment work, learn about danger statements and safety goals, scaling, as well as learn about tools available to support safety planning with children and families.

Contextual safeguarding along a lifespan
Time: 10am to 1pm

Description: BSAFE and Community Safety will be delivering a workshop on the lifespan of safeguarding. This will be looking specifically at child exploitation and transitions from children’s to adults. Looking at opportunities for intervention along the lifespan for children and adults, who are exploited.

Signs and indicators of domestic abuse

Description: Learn about what constitutes domestic abuse, the signs, indicators and effects, how to refer to specialist services in Sheffield and how those specialist services (including IDAS) can help.

Graded care profile 2
Time: 9:30am to 1pm
Venue: Barnsley Town Hall
Description: A key priority for the implementation of Barnsley’s Safeguarding Children Partnership's Neglect Strategy is for workers in all services in Barnsley to be able to recognise neglect earlier and intervene most effectively. To support this priority Barnsley has purchased the graded care profile 2 licence from the NSPCC.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Webinars
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue's prevention work over the last 15 years has helped to reduce accidental house fires to historically low levels, but there has been a slight increase in fatal incidents.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are hosting a number of events during the week to support agencies to recognise some of the commonly occurring risks and the support that may be available.

Safeguarding adults and homelessness conference

Description:
This conference will look at learning from previous safeguarding adults reviews and how these can be implemented into practice. We've arranged 3 speakers for this conference, these are:
• Professor Michael Preston-Shoot Michael is a former Independent Chair of Luton Safeguarding Adults Board and has conducted multiple safeguarding adult reviews, including a national review of safeguarding adult reviews between April 2019 and March 2023.
• Mike Ward, from Alcohol Change UK - Mike Ward is a Senior Consultant at Alcohol Change UK. He has worked in alcohol and drug use since the 1982. He has undertaken safeguarding adult reviews and was a key driver behind the Blue Light project.
• Ellie Atkins - Ellie Atkins, manages a successful social work team in Manchester specifically supporting people who are homeless.

Wednesday 26 November
Good practice when issues with someone's mental capacity may be disguised
Time: 9:30am to 12:30pm
Venue: Barnsley Town Hall, meeting room 11
Description: This workshop will be for workers with a good understanding of mental capacity and may work with individuals where people may initially appear that they have the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves. This workshop will consider case studies and good practice when working with people where issues with their mental capacity were disguised. The event will provide a forum for workers to discuss challenging cases, practical dilemmas and discuss good practice when working alongside other agencies.

Supporting LGBT+ Survivors of Domestic Abuse

Description: Domestic abuse affects people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, but LGBT+ victims often remain hidden, overlooked, or misunderstood by services that may not have been built with them in mind. This essential half-day course will equip you with the tools, language, and confidence to offer safe, inclusive, and informed support to LGBT+ clients.

Basic safeguarding adults

Description: This course is intended for anyone working at Level A in Barnsley Safeguarding Adults Board Learning Strategy, however, it could be useful for anyone working with adults with care and support needs across Barnsley who is interested in understanding how to identify possible abuse and neglect, and what action they can take to report any concerns that they may have.
