Joining Forces partnership
Joining Forces is a partnership approach to help us keep residents safe. It brings together key members of staff from the council and South Yorkshire Police.
The police's safer neighbourhood service, as well as our markets and parking services, are based together at The Glass Works in Barnsley town centre. This allows the delivery of our partnership work from a central location, improving security and safety. Read our latest Central neighbourhood newsletter to find out more about our activities.
Our partners
Through our Joining Forces partnership we work together with:
Neighbourhood wardens
Our neighbourhood wardens work to help deter low level criminal behaviour, environment offences, and anti-social behaviour. Working with our partners, they can offer advice and support if you have any concerns in your community.
They work to promote unity and help people and neighbourhoods to identify and resolve problems. They also have enforcement powers on littering, fly-tipping, and public space protection orders.
Town centre wardens
Our town centre wardens patrol the town centre to stop low level crime, environment offences, and anti-social behaviour. They have the power to enforce the Barnsley town centre public space protection order and can issue fixed penalty notices (FPNs), but will try to use low level resolution first.
Their role is to offer advice and support to those who need it, including locating vehicles and offering directions.
Barnsley's public space protection order (PSPO)
Barnsley town centre has a public space protection order in place. This is part of the ongoing Joining Forces work to make sure Barnsley continues to be a safe, inclusive and attractive place to visit. The PSPO gives the police, council and other officers extra powers to deal with low level anti-social behaviour.
Our town centre and neighbourhood wardens both have enforcement powers under the PSPO. In the video below one of our town centre wardens talks about his role.
How to get involved
We work closely with residents to try to prevent crime and tackle local issues. Visit our webpage about working with communities to tackle crime to find out how you can get involved, including joining your local Police and Communities Together (PACT) meeting.
