About us
Barnsley’s industrial past has shaped our borough. We’re proud of our rich heritage, and we know our residents are too. We take care of our local environment, and our welcoming people and communities are one of our biggest assets. We’re also home of one of the best markets in South Yorkshire. Everyone can enjoy the borough’s excellent cultural attractions, leisure facilities, and our beautiful outdoor spaces.
Our attractive local offer also makes Barnsley an appealing place to live. Our thriving town centre and principal towns and local village centres are the places to be.
About the role
We're looking for an exceptional leader to take the helm of our Highways service.
We're a borough that has transformed over the past decade and continues to look confidently to the future. Significant investment in regeneration, infrastructure and public realm has reshaped the town centre and strengthened Barnsley’s identity as an ambitious and forward-looking place. We're widely recognised for delivering change at pace while maintaining strong relationships with its communities and workforce.
Infrastructure sits at the heart of this story. The highways network plays a vital role in supporting economic growth, connecting communities, and ensuring the borough continues to thrive. As a key service within the council, highways underpin regeneration, transport connectivity, climate resilience, and everyday quality of life for residents.
Barnsley is also part of a wider regional growth agenda through its relationship with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, where significant investment is being directed into infrastructure and connectivity across the region.
This is a council that is proud of its progress, ambitious for the future and determined to continue delivering for its residents.

By 2030 we want everyone to benefit from, and contribute to, making our borough a thriving place of possibilities.
Everyone has an important role in working together to make our ambitions for the borough possible. This in turn will improve the lives of residents. This includes our residents and groups across the private, public, voluntary and community sectors all working together.
