Grass cutting, weeds and leaf clearance
As part of our normal maintenance activities we:
cut grass verges in spring and summer
cut hedges between October and February
spray weeds in late spring, mid-summer, and late summer to autumn
Grass cutting
We cut areas of grass in the borough that are owned by us. We also maintain most of the grass verges that run alongside roads and streets, making sure these are safe and free from obstructions. If a verge is damaged and there's a danger to the public, we'll repair this.
We don't cut grass that's on privately owned land. We also don't maintain some grassed areas if grass cutting isn't necessary, such as on bankings and areas of low use.
When we cut grass
We cut the grass in some areas of the borough more often than others. For example, grassed areas next to the primary roads into the borough are cut more often than some in more remote areas.
We have a grass cutting schedule and aim to cut the majority of areas we own within 18 working days.
If the grass on a verge is longer than you think it should be, we may just be about to cut it. We may also have been holding off cutting it while there are flowers growing.

Our planned grass cutting schedule for 2026 is below. The schedule is weather dependent and subject to change.

Weeds
We aim to keep the following areas free of weeds:
shrub and rose beds
perimeters of buildings
channels and edges of roads and footpaths
obstacles in verges and along the bottom of railings
Leaf clearance
We try to remove the bulk of leaves in areas with a greater number of trees so they don’t become a problem. The weather will affect the amount of leaves that need removing at each location.
We work to the government's code of practice for waste and litter. This doesn’t require us to remove freshly fallen leaves. If an area has lots of fallen leaves and is becoming unsafe, contact us online to report this.
