Sustainable school travel

Our Active Travel Strategy sets out our aims to encourage people to walk, cycle or use public transport instead of using a car.

We're working with schools and parents to:

reduce car use to reduce traffic and pollution
provide choices for travel and make sure that transport is not a barrier against going to school
improve travel safety
improve the health of children and young people
make people aware of and promote sustainable travel and help the environment

Accreditation for schools supporting active travel

Modeshift STARS is a national awards scheme to recognise schools that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other active travel. Schools in England (outside of London) can take part in the scheme for free.

After applying to join Modeshift STARS, schools will have a national standard school travel plan.
