Fly-tipping
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of rubbish or unwanted items in the street or on open land. If you see some fly-tipping in the borough, you can report it to us.
Please don't move or remove anything contained in the dumped waste. It could be harmful to you, and tampering with any evidence that links a person or address to the rubbish could harm our investigations.
If the fly-tipping is on private land it's the land owner's responsibility to remove it. We'll still investigate, but will contact them to tell them it needs removing.
Please note: waste left in purple sacks isn't fly-tipping - this is rubbish collected as part of a litter pick. The organisers will have told us about these to arrange for them to be collected, so you don't need to report these to us.
How to report fly-tipping
You can report fly-tipping using our online form below. In the form you'll need to show us on a map where the fly-tipping is by clicking to drop a pin. You'll also need to tell us the type of rubbish and approximately how much has been dumped. You can upload a photo of the fly-tipping as well, if you have one.
You can make an anonymous report, but if you'd like to receive a receipt and reference number you need to tell us your email address. If you saw the fly-tipping being dumped and are willing to give us a witness statement which we may use to prosecute the person responsible, you'll need to tell us your details so we can contact you.
Don’t use this form to report anything else at the location other than fly-tipping. We have different forms to report issues such as dog fouling or a litter bin that needs emptying. See our full list of reporting forms.
After making your report
After you've submitted the form you'll see a confirmation screen that includes status updates for your report. You can bookmark/favourite the webpage so you can check back later to see the report status. If you've told us your email address, we'll send you a receipt including a link to view the status updates.
What happens next
When we receive a report about fly-tipping we aim to remove the rubbish within five working days. It could take more than five days if hazardous waste is involved. For example, we have to get specialist contractors to remove things like asbestos or chemical substances.
If the rubbish is on private land we'll contact the land owner to tell them it needs removing. If you're the landowner but you can't remove the fly-tipping we can remove it for you, but we'll charge you the cost of doing this.
If we can prove who carried out the fly-tipping we can fine or prosecute them and seize any vehicles involved.
Tackling fly-tipping
Together we can tackle fly-tipping and keep Barnsley clean and tidy. We encourage everyone to dispose of their unwanted items and rubbish responsibly as part of our #EverybodyThink campaign. If you need to get rid of something too big to fit in your bin, you can use our bulky waste collection service.
