Get help to put your bins out
If you're aged 80 or over, or if you have a disability or medical condition that stops you being able to put your bins out, you can apply for assisted bin collections if there’s nobody else who can do it for you.
With assisted bin collections our waste crew will collect your bin from where it's stored on your property, empty it in the collection vehicle, then return it back to your storage point.
When you apply for assisted bin collections we may need to visit your property to review where you store your bins to make sure we'll be able to access them.
Eligibility
To be eligible for assisted bin collections you must either:
- be aged 80 or over
- have a medical condition or disability that prevents you from putting your bins out, or be otherwise physically unable to do so (regardless of age)
You must also:
- have no other resident living at your property who's able to put the bins out for you
- have no other members of family living within the grounds of the same property
How to apply
You can apply for assisted bin collections by calling us on 01226 773555.
We'll send you a form to fill in which needs to include all relevant details for everyone living at your property.
If you're applying for assisted bin collections as you have a medical condition or disability, you’ll need to provide evidence of this to support your application. This can be proof you receive a disability or mobility benefit, or a confirmation letter from your GP or hospital clinic.
What happens next
After receiving your form we'll visit your property to complete a risk assessment. This will including looking into:
- visible risks
- any pets
- the distance to your bin collection point
- underfoot conditions
- suitable lighting at your property
You need to make sure that all risks are reduced, and that the paths and surfaces where the bins will be moved are kept clear so we can safely collect and return them. We might ask for your bins to be moved so we can access them easier.
If we can provide you with assisted bin collections
If you're eligible for assisted bin collections and our risk assessment is satisfactory, we'll tell you the date these will begin.
If there isn't a suitable place for us to collect your bin from, we might ask you to use sacks for your waste instead. You'll need to put all of your waste into these, and we won't remove any loose waste or collect the sacks if they're overloaded, split or in a poor condition.
If a risk assessment shows there's a new risk to our collection crew (such as a new pet), or if the site conditions change and it's no longer safe for our crew to attend (such as a change in underfoot conditions), we can withdraw the service.
If we can't provide you with assisted bin collections
If you're not eligible for assisted bin collections or we can't provide you with the service following our risk assessment, we'll tell you the reasons why.
