Barnsley Council awarded global Health and Safety Award 25 years running

We are very proud to have received a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Patron’s Award, recognising our continued commitment to high standards of health and safety.

This marks the 25th consecutive year we have achieved gold standard, reflecting the consistent care and attention given to keeping people safe across our services.

The RoSPA Health and Safety Awards are now in their 70th year and remain the UK’s largest health and safety awards scheme, celebrating seven decades of progress, leadership and lifesaving work across organisations and communities.

Drawing nearly 2,000 entries every year from more than 60 countries and 34 industry sectors, the awards recognise organisations that continue to improve how accidents and ill health are prevented at work.

Wendy Popplewell, Executive Director for Core Services, said:

“I am delighted that we have received this internationally recognised RoSPA award for our health and safety performance in 2025. Winning Gold standard for the 25th year in a row is a real achievement and shows just how strongly health and safety is valued across the council.

“I want to recognise the dedication and hard work of our health and safety team, who play a vital role in protecting our employees and keeping people safe. This award reflects how firmly staff wellbeing is embedded in everything we do and how we live our values by caring for our people and taking responsibility for keeping one another safe.

“It also recognises the commitment shown across the organisation and our schools to following good practice, working together to keep everyone healthy, safe and well. A huge well done and thank you to everyone involved.”
