Barnsley Libraries’ The Story Shell crowned Best Family Arts Activity in national awards

We’re delighted that our Libraries service have been awarded best family arts activity at the Fantastic for Families awards.

Our Libraries National Portfolio Organisation team were awarded for their fantastic work to develop The Story Shell - a six-metre-high inflatable storytelling space designed to offer a unique and immersive creative experience.

We unveiled The Story Shell back in 2024, as a unique and functional art space created by international artists Steve Messam and Suzie Devey. An air-filled space in the shape of a giant shell, able to fit a class of 30 children inside and be transported across the borough, the shell has since then been host to arts-based activities, storytelling, music, theatre and more.

As a winner, The Story Shell joins a select group of projects celebrated for pushing creative boundaries in libraries. This award is a real testament to the work our NPO team are doing to develop high-quality, accessible cultural programmes and deliver exciting and inclusive activities across Barnsley.

Organised by Family Arts Campaign, the Fantastic for Families Awards showcases the real innovation, creativity and impact made by cultural opportunities in the UK. Alongside The Story Shell, this year’s finalists demonstrate how cultural opportunities can improve wellbeing, foster belonging, and provide vital support for families and older people during challenging times.

Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities and Public Health, said: “We are absolutely delighted that The Story Shell has been awarded in the Fantastic for Families Awards. This project really embodies what happens when we embrace bold, innovative ideas – bringing storytelling and creativity directly into our communities in new ways.”

The Fantastic for Families Awards judges said: "The Story Shell is a magical and innovative storytelling space that's both creative and inclusive. We loved the diversity of artists, storytellers, and partners involved, and the fact that it's adaptable and transportable means it reaches families wherever they are. Nearly ten thousand people have experienced this magical space so far - a real testament to its impact."
